Marine Patrol Area

tallship.jpg (13339 bytes)On the county's north shore, the patrol area includes a large portion of the Long Island Sound eastward from, and including, Little Neck Bay where Nassau County adjoins New York City.  The county line generally extends in a northeasterly direction through the center of the Long Island marine1&sub.jpg (70525 bytes)Sound adjoining Bronx County, New York, Westchester County, New York and Fairfield County, Connecticut.  The Marine Bureau patrols the area from the county line southward including Manhasset Bay, Hempstead Harbor, Oyster Bay, West Harbor, Cold Spring Harbor and east to the Suffolk County line in Huntington Bay.  There are two marine patrol posts on the north shore, one west and the other east, which are geographically divided by Matinecock Point in the City of Glen Cove.

On the county's south shore, the patrol area includes the Atlantic Ocean eastward from the New York City line at the East Rockaway Inlet to the Suffolk County line at West Gilgo and southward to three nautical miles off shore.  The patrol area also includes the vast south shore bays, islands, channels, rivers, canals, and inlets.  There are two marine patrol posts on the south shore one west and the other east, which are geographically divided by the Meadowbrook Parkway.

the Nassau County Police Marine Bureau has an exceptional working relationship with the United States Coast Guard. Nassau County waterways fall under the federal jurisdiction of Coast Guard Sector New York and Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound.  There are two Coast Guard stations in Nassau County. Coast Guard Station Jones Beach is located on Nassau County's south shore and is the busiest Coast Guard station on Long Island.  The newest Coast Guard station on Long Island is located at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point) on Nassau County's north shore.
